How to record console gameplay for YouTube
1. PlayStation 4
Released back in November 2013, the PlayStation 4 is an upgrade of the very successful PlayStation 3. Top features being the ability to upgrade your hard drive by space or technology [SSD], the sharing button which does exactly what I’ll be showing you below, and much more.
So let’s say you have that part of a game that has been a headache to get over and finally you somehow manage to do so. You definitely will be excited and most probably want to share your walkthrough with your friends, right?
Okay, this is already starting to get long, so right away I am going to show you two methods I use to record console gameplay for YouTube.
Using the Inbuilt share button – How to record console gameplay for YouTube
Sony made it quite obvious that they really want to put every sharing aspect as easy as possible on the PS4. The console’s controller has a dedicated share button that makes sharing of recorded videos so easy.
You can show your friends how to do certain things such as walkthroughs, the pretty cool things you’ve done in games and much more. If you want to record a part of your gameplay, let’s say the walkthroughs example I have stated above, here’s what you do: You can then send your clips to Youtube, Twitch, Facebook
- Launch/start your game as usual.
- Play until you reach the part where you want to record your achievement or special actions.
- Double tap the share button. You will get a notification[top left of the screen] that the recording has started.
- Once you have your desired clip, all you have to do is long press the share button again and the recording stops. You can then send your clips to Youtube, Twitch, Facebook in the next page that appears. Its that simple!
Don’t want to upload on the go? you’ll need a USB stick to save your videos to.
Using HDMI and a capture card – How to record console gameplay for YouTube
Another way to record your PS4 gameplay is by use of a capture card or screen recording software and an HDMI cable. This is the widely used method, most probably due to the fact that you can customize a lot of things and put extra features such as watermarks. Simply put, a raw video with no editing is not always a welcome idea, especially when its a gaming video. You not only need to know how to record console gameplay for youtube, you also need to know how to tailor these videos.
You will need:
- Screen recorder software
- HDMI cable
We will be using the PC screen as our gaming screen by projecting our gameplay to it. The choice of screen recording software will depend on you, as there are a number of good ones available. I personally use the Elgato game capture card, but if you want to use a software Instead, here are a bunch of some I’d recommend:
- Xsplit Gamecaster
- Wm Capture
- Open Broadcaster Software
- Action [ Read our review]
Once you install and configure your choice game capture card, all you have to do is connect your PS4 to your PC then power your console. This option is useful if you record longer videos and want to edit the video to look professional. It also allows you to choose whether to record the entire screen or the area of your gameplay only. A software like the one in Elgato, as well as Action, allows you to directly upload your videos to YouTube, twitch, Vimeo, Facebook and other streaming channels.
